Abstract:

The business world is in the process of a global transformation. Mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing and downsizing are becoming common word everywhere. International boundaries are fading in importance as businesses take on a more global perspective (Stevens, 2000). Strategic management takes a panoramic view of this changing business terrain and attempts to show how large and small firms can be more effective and efficient not only in today's world but tomorrow as well. Strategic management is the set of managerial decisions and action that determines the way for the long-range performance of the company. It includes environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy evaluation and control, evaluation and control. The objectives of the study were to establish strategy evaluation and control practices at Ushuru Sacco and determine the factors that influence strategy evaluation and control practices at Ushuru Sacco. The research was conducted through a case study method. A sample of six persons from the top and middle management was interviewed in order to gain an insight into what response strategies that this level of management applied in order to deal with the changing the strategic evaluation and control system. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The study found that to ensure compliance with the strategy can go a long way in helping the Sacco gain a competitive edge, help in defining the business of the Sacco and also help in achieving right direction. The study finally concludes that initiatives are taken by management in creating and sustaining a climate within the Sacco that motivates employees in their implementation role with managers paying as much attention to planning the implementation of their strategies as they give to formulating them. Since this study adopted the interview method as the primary data collection method, the researcher suggests that a study be carried out using other methods of primary and secondary data collection to see whether there will be difference in the results.

Globalization has brought competition to the door steps of most companies in every industry the world over. It is an attempt to reduce the vast world to a mere global village by facilitating interaction of people and business transactions through technological breakthroughs. A gap exists on the strategic measures that a fmancial institution operating locally should take to counter the challenges of globalization without necessarily trading in the international market. The National Bank Kenya thus becomes the focus organization that the study uses to fill up this knowledge gap. The research question therefore is: What strategic responses is the National Bank of Kenya putting in place to arrest the challenges of globalization? The objectives of the study were to establish the challenges of globalization faced by National Bank of Kenya limited and the strategic responses by the National Bank of Kenya Limited to challenges of globalization. The study used the case study design to gather qualitative data using an interview guide and it focused on the National Bank of Kenya Limited. The primary data upon being cleaned and presented according to the study themes was analyzed through content analysis (qualitative analysis). The fmdings reveal that the bank has not reviewed its mission for the last five years. Globalization has had an impact on every single department in the bank. As such, the bank has put in place strategies to counter the challenges of globalization. The study recommends that the bank should embrace the various aspects of globalization in its entire departments as they are mostly 'positive and beneficial to the company.

Abstract:

The study sought to determine the strategic responses by Kenyan airlines to the changes in the price of aviation fuel. It further investigated whether Kenyan airlines had adopted financial and/or non financial strategies, the extent to which these strategies had been implemented and the level of success that they had with these strategies in responses to the changes in the price of aviation fuel. The study was based on a census of the six airlines operating in Kenya. The respondents of the study were the Finance and Flight Operations managers in the respective airlines. A semi structured questionnaire was applied as the data collection tool which contained a mix of open-ended and closed-ended questions. Data was analyzed through the use of The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). It was observed that Kenyan airlines have adopted a number of strategies in response to the changes in the price of aviation fuel. These have been through fleet management decisions, weight reduction programs and modification of flight operations procedures. It was further observed that these strategies have been applied in differing degrees by the respective airlines with varying degrees of success based on the total savings achieved. The study suggests further research studies in the area of the air traffic management and different operational practices hold some prospect for reductions in fuel usage or mitigation of environmental effects of aviation.

Abstract:

Successful organizations recognize the importance of strategy as a tool in management and realize that their survival is dependent on how well they adopt new strategies or enhance existing strategies in an attempt to respond to the changes brought by the environment. While the quality of strategy is important, we canner omit the importance of effectively executing it. As the organization faces the challenge of successful strategy implementation, tools to aid this important task cannot be overlooked. The use of balance scorecard as a tool for strategy implementation appears to be increasingly important in determining the success of implementation of strategies. Many organisations have in one way or another adopted balanced scorecard in strategy implementation. This study, using strategy implementation as the theoretical background, sought to contribute to a greater understanding, the challenges of the balanced scorecard as strategy implementation tool. The data was collected by the use of questionnaires filled by respondents from the 6 largest banks in Kenya. The survey data results were analysed and statistics such as the proportion of respondents in favour of a position was reported. The study results indicate large banks have adopted the Balanced Scorecard in strategy management and it has improved business output. Most of perspectives of the balanced scorecard have been applied to a large extent in strategy management. Majority of the respondents felt that it is generally difficult to apply the tool in tasks of strategy implementation. The study results indicate that the main challenges in its application for strategy implementation include; using it for compensation only, having too many strategy indicators, making a quantitative link between non financial leading indicators and expected financial results and the fact that staff has not fully understood and embraced the tool. The study recommends further research on the topic of challenges of the application of balanced scorecard and the recommends that it should be implemented with care in order to reap the intended benefits. Proper implementation of Balance Scorecard can ensure the development of competencies within an organization which help it to develop a competitive advantage without which it cannot expect to outperform its rivals.

Abstract:

Organizations implement a variety of strategies in order to fulfill their objectives. Though this is their target, it is not often the case as some organizations with good strategies end up implementing them poorly. This prompted the Government of Kenya to introduce Public Sector reforms that has resulted to all Government ministries, departments and agencies developing strategic plans to guide their strategic direction and the formulation and implementation of their long-term goals and objectives. The Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons is no exception and this prompted the researcher to carry out a study in the department of National Registration Bureau. The objectives of the study were to establish the strategy implementation practices in the department of National Registration Bureau, and challenges encountered in strategy implementation. A case study research design was used to conduct the study and an interview guide administered to seven senior managers in the department. The study findings revealed that the organizational structure, organizational resources, culture, leadership style, internal communication systems, Information Technology, policies and procedure, and core competencies and skills were factors affecting strategy implementation in the department. The department encountered various challenges during the implementation process and measures have been put in place to deal with the challenges. The findings revealed a link and relationship with other studies on related subjects carried out by other researchers. The researcher recommends that performance management need to be embedded and rolled out across the department, since it contributes to successful strategy implementation. The department needs to employ a world class state of technology in terms of equipment, infrastructure and skills. The study was limited by the fact that the researcher having adopted a case study design makes it difficult to generalize the findings and therefore, the results cannot be inferred to another organization. The researcher had to work within limited time span and this constrained the scope as well as the depth of the study. The researcher suggests similar studies involving middle and lower level staff be carried out to get their insight regarding strategy implementation in the department. A study could also be conducted in future to investigate how performance management in NRB can be improved to support strategy implementation process.

Abstract:

Strategies are critical in organization functioning. Whereas most organizations have good strategies, successful strategy implementation remains the major challenge in strategy implementation process. The notion of strategy implementation might seem quite straight forward yet in contrary, transfonning strategies into actions is far more complex, difficult and challenging. This is why challenges need to be addressed because even the best strategy would be ineffective if not implemented successfully and hence overall results may not be achieved as expected. The research project was a case study on CCN. The objective of the study was to establish strategy implementation at CCN, examine the challenges faced during the implementation and detennine how these challenges were addressed. In order to achieve the research objective, primary data was collected using interview guides. Personal interviews were conducted mainly to those respondents who are charged with the responsibility of implementing strategies at CCN. The study established most of the challenges of implementation as both internal and external stakeholders. To a larger extent the study found out that corporate strategy in itself, organization politics, structure and culture, government decisions, in adequate resources, poor communication, resistance to change and other uncontrollable factors as major challenges encountered during strategy implementation. The study provide CCN with useful information on how to successfully implement strategies in future by adopting appropriate styles and coming up with effective monitoring and control systems to mitigate challenges associated with strategy implementation.
