Abstract:

Religion having a social and community dimension cannot fail to have a cultural aspect too. It is both individually and communally experienced. In A.T.R. great emphasis was laid on the communal dimension. While there are elements of revealed truth in A.T.R. (natural) Christianity places great importance to the divine revelation constituted in the salvivic history by way of 'word', 'person', 'spirit', 'tradition' and magisterium. This revelation call for human beings response by faith. This faith of mankind stirs them to a journey to salvation. Being prompted by God's providence, concern and love for the world, the witness of the Gospel is meant to reach and benefit all mankind. Evangelization is resultant of this missionary orientation of the believing people of God. In this thesis dialogue in evangelization is assumed to be a sincere and open confrontation of the 'evangelized' and the 'non ,evangelized in search of 'a' truth that brings meaning to the individual believer's concrete life situation. The study is specifically based on the catholic catechesis (instructions towards faith) as evangelization. It is a focused investigation of the methods of catechesis and their openness to inculturation and dialogue. While this is studied, the African christian family is put into the centre of this issue as a possible transmitter of the new faith. The main problem that prompted this kind of an investigation is that some authors (quoted here in) plus many others have expressed their concern that christianity has not been deeply rooted as such in the African way of life. The African christian family being of such importance, the research found out that the formation of the same (family) may not be entirely dependent on religious faith. A study of the trend of the formation of African christian families for ten years in some sample parishes in the catholic diocese of Nakuru showed this. However, other related studies of the catechetical practice did not dispel the need of the family as an evangelizing pastoral agent. other evangelizers (catechist/priest) were studied in relation to the family and comparisons made. In addition, the research aimed at investigating the aids that a catholic parent may have in terms of evangelization. Many lay movements have been enumerated. This research was carried out in the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru (Kenya) which comprises four administrative districts. The districts are:- Baringo, Bomet, Kericho and Nakuru. Many cultural the argument. issues have been raised in the course of The final chapter includes some recommendations by the author. Several items have been suggested both for long term and short term implementations. It was especially suggested that open forum cultural discussions led by the ministers of the word, be regularly held at parish levels as an aid to further cultural opening up of people to the Gospel truth. In this way, the seeds of the Gospel hidden in cultures can be discovered and tended, while attention can be well focused on cultural hindrances to strong African christian families.

Abstract:

The research is based on the hypothesis that there is no pastoral care and ongoing Christian formation for Catholic students in secondary schools. It is based on experience and research findings among Catholic students in secondary schools within the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, Kenya. It examines the history of education in Kenya and the part the Church plays. In this study government legis laThis thesis recommends that there should be a religious Education Advisor for Inservicing Religious Education Teachers (CISRET) and Religious Awareness Programmes (REAP) for Secondary teachers, proper education in counselling and spiritual direction will enable them to offer an integrated service to the students. There is need for a training centre in the Diocese and coordination of Pastoral Programme on national level. Co-operation with the Ministry of Education is necessary with aims of persuading it to introduce CISRET and REAP in teacher training colleges. The Ministry with time may be persuaded to accept and pay Catholic chaplains, counsellors and teachers in Secondary schools.
